Venetian (glass)
Assorted Venetian beads (glass), best quality and designs, 1800s, traded into West Africa. Central pendant (rhomboidal, green and black) is a Neolithic (2000 years old?) stone bread excavated in Mauritania. (The classic ‘trade bead era’ was from 15th to early 20th centuries. This particular strand was personally assembled as a “sampler” or “trader’s” strand by the legendary merchant Oumar Cisse in Sevaré, near Mopti, Central Mali, where I bought it in 2015 from his grandson, Ibrahim. Oumar died in 2021.
